Transcripts, transcripts, and more transcripts

You’re the second person to say that to me today
For years people asked, “Why hasn’t Ariane made the transcripts available to download?” To which my answer was always along the lines of, “You know why she’s here? She’s not paid or anything.” And, to be honest, the last thing I wanted was people taking downloads and scurrying off without even bothering to post a comment at the bottom of my Livejournal pages.

But eventually I relented and made the transcripts available to download.

Thank you so very much. For a non-native viewer of the show and reader of Sherlock fanfics your work is extremely helpful. I love love love your comments in the 'extended' version.
And I'm happy for you each time your name is mentioned in the comments or notes of fics. In this fandom you are a celebrity. And deservedly so.

Thank you so much for your comments! I'm glad that the transcripts are helpful.

I too get a thrill whenever I read a fic and see mention of the transcripts by the author. It's lovely to know that all the work has been worthwhile!
27th-Apr-2016 10:51 pm (UTC) - Thanks a million
Thank you very much! This must have taken ages... Indispensable especially for us non-native speakers.
One problem: can't download any of the files. The message is in Russian, which is normal - I am in Russia. Something about the wrong certificate for the site. Help pages advise to contact the owner of the page, which I am doing.
The point - thanks again! Great job, and so helpful!
28th-Apr-2016 08:20 am (UTC) - Re: Thanks a million
Oh, I'm sorry you can't download the files! Unfortunately I have no idea what to do about it. Nobody else has reported a problem, and I'm not whizzy enough IT-wise to be able to advise an alternative method of downloading them. I'm really sorry!

If you need them badly and want to find me on Facebook (Ariane DeVere) and then privately message me your email address, I could try to email you the Word documents. The pdf files would probably be too big to travel safely by email, and I'm not totally confident about the full-transcripts Word file, but I could give it a try.

25th-May-2016 02:15 am (UTC) - Amazing!
I needed this! I needed this so bad! Thank you for putting all of this together for crazy Sherlockians like me! Beautiful you!

Glad to be of service!
14th-Aug-2016 06:01 pm (UTC) - You're amazing
I honestly do not know if I've ever left a comment here. If I haven't, then I apologize.
I think you're absolutely amazing and... while I cannot exactly say that I would have been utterly unable to write my fics (eighteen concerning Sherlock -and Johnlock- to the date, with the 19th in progress) without you, it certainly would have been a lot harder. And I know I'm not the only one.
So, thank you very much for all the amazing work you've done. My best wishes!

P.S. You're awesome!
15th-Aug-2016 08:30 am (UTC) - Re: You're amazing
I started writing these transcripts because Verity Burns, a prolific fanfic writer post Season 1, persuaded me that they would be really useful to herself and other such writers so that they didn't have to keep searching through their DVDs to check relevant lines. However, I was - and continue to be - blown away by how many fic writers use the transcripts, though I'm always glad that the effort was worthwhile.

Thank you for letting me know that the transcripts have been useful!

Thank you for your kind comment. As long as Mofftiss keep producing good episodes, I'll keep on doing this labour of love!

Love! Love! Love!

And dare I repeat, LOVE!

I enjoy the transcriptionist's commentary thoroughly and it often causes me to go back to that scene in the show to rewatch it.

Thank you so much for your (obvious) labor of love.

You are awesome, amazing, unbelievably kind, and my personal hero. Your transcripts (that actually feel more like the original scripts with all the description etc) are so beautiful that reading the is like re-watching the show. And I love the occasional personal comment, it feels like you're not just watching the episode, but doing that in good company! And thanks also for the versions to download. *bows respectfully in gratitude*

Sorry it's taken so long to reply to this, but I wanted to thank you for such a lovely comment. I'm so glad that my occasional asides add to the pleasure! Thanks for writing.

"I imagine people have already warned you to stay away from transcripts, but I can see from your left hand that’s not going to happen."

Or my right hand, rather, seeing as I'm controlling the mouse with that hand. =) LOL!

Thanks for the transcripts, Ariane!

13th-Feb-2017 11:48 pm (UTC) - The Best!
That's what you are! You're the best!
And oh, how I love your "snarky asides" and scene descriptions. Wouldn't want to read the scripts without them. You have such an eye for details I would have missed.
THANK YOU , THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
Happy Valentine's to you 😘
14th-Feb-2017 09:10 am (UTC) - Re: The Best!
Thank you, honey. It's always a relief to find that my asides don't annoy people; and I'm glad that the detailed descriptions are useful/interesting and don't get in the way of the dialogue too much.
14th-Feb-2017 03:03 am (UTC)
you are far too good to us!

these will be incredibly useful.

I’ve got Miss DeVere on semi-permanent mute
Do you trudge through part of a transcript looking for a particular conversation or just one line, but are constantly fed up with having to skim past all the descriptive stuff written by your dedicated and humble transcriber? Don’t you wish there was a version with just the dialogue?

Now there is. No descriptions of the scenes or voice tones, and none of DeVere’s snarky asides.

WTF?! Who are these strange creatures? The number one reason I read your transcripts is NOT for the actual dialogue (altho, you'd think it would be) but in fact, it's for your snarky asides. Your descriptive remarks bring the episode to life, and the snide commentary adds spice to the BBC script. There was humor in The Six Thatchers, most especially in the very beginning, but your commentary allowed me to re-watch the episode and LOL when Lestrade looks up at the sky after Sherlock names the last two people on the list of the Georgian statutes. Or when what's-his-name (Mary's friend who was tortured) puts his necklace in the statute right before he's captured. And I suddenly realized that his name is written right above my eye level. Ari. I'm not erasing the last sentence. I'm quite lazy.

My point is simply: your commentary is [word used by tweens these days that I don't know but that means 'totally cool & wondrous'].

Why would anyone want a transcript that left that out...?? Clearly they are one of those 'uncontainables'...
16th-Feb-2017 09:13 am (UTC)
Oh, Pam, you are adorable! Thank you for such a sweet comment.

I will, however, make excuses for the 'uncontainables.' If people are writing fanfic, or meta, or just want to look at one scene or a conversation to see exactly what was said, it's surely easier to do so when they've just got what was said, uninterrupted by description of the visuals. Even I look through those versions sometimes and think, "Oh, yeah, now I see why she said it that way," or "Oh, I get what was being implied now." I can't think of a specific example right now but I'm sure I looked at a particular scene from Season 4 with just the spoken words and finally had a better understanding.

But it is always nice to be told that people like reading the full transcripts and enjoy my conversational nature, so thank you very much for saying so.
