A Study in Anger

He doesn’t want to go to school today. He doesn’t want to go to school any day, but recently the sneers and insults of the big boys have become more hurtful and frequent. It’s not fair that they hate him just because he’s different. Mummy has always said that being clever is a good thing and he’ll be able to help others when he gets older, so why are they so horrible to him? Don’t they realise he might be something brilliant, like a doctor, and save their lives one day?

There’s one person he might ask for advice, but he knows that his older sibling will probably suggest that he tells a teacher, and then go back to reading those stupid politics books, the big fat idiot. He giggles momentarily at the silent insult, knowing what Mummy would say if she ever heard him say it out loud.

And then he’s back at school, on his knees in the playground, his books scattered around him where they’ve been dumped out of his bag, and the big boys and their leader are sneering at him while the playground monitor turns a blind eye. He blinks rapidly, determined not to cry, and the fury grows inside him.

“When I’m older,” he vows silently, “Carl Powers will regret he was ever a bully.”

Author’s note: Yet another 221B. Couldn’t have been completed to my satisfaction without the help of
[info]verityburns who nitpicked fastidiously until, between us, we got it as good as we could manage. Thanks, honey. *hugs* Am I peeved that you were the one who came up with the final version of the final line? Meh, only a lot teeny bit. ;-) Now stop working on my fic and start writing your own again!

Oh my goodness! This is awesome. I love the twist at the end. Poor little Jimmy.

Goodness, I thought it was about Sherlock until the very end. What with the older, fat sibling and all. Interesting.

Very neat! You had me going until the last line too!

I read the last line first - unintentionally - and thought 'Oh, a Moriarty 221B!'

Then I read on and thought 'Wait, what? Mummy? Older sibling? Sherlock? Moriarty would have been so much cooler. But the last line for Sherlock? Hm, that does not really make sense...'

So I read it again and thought 'Oh, a Moriarty 221B afterall!'

Nice one! You got us all and me especially confused!

Yeah, what Atlin said :D

I never really commented on the content, because I was too busy nitpicking, but I have to say, I think this is really clever.

Also - the final version of the final line is actually yours, if you remember. If I'd done it it would have had less silence (and more commas!)

Nice final twist. He and Sherlock do have an inner child peeping up now on occasion - I wonder what would have happened if the two of them had been bullied in the same school.

I did see the twist coming, tbh, but only because I'd read the cabbie one first, so I knew you could be sneaky :P That didn't stop me from enjoying it a lot though :)

Well, maybe a bit.
