Summary: I am Sherlock Holmes’ protégé.

A birthday fic for chocolamousse

I am Sherlock Holmes’ protégé.

He didn’t actually ask me to be his apprentice but he was surprised at how good I was at deducing. I had no idea how impressed he would be – I just told him what I was thinking, and I was pleased and a bit proud when the thing I had deduced turned out to be correct. Later, in private, he told me that he hadn’t met someone as insightful and perceptive as me for a long time. Well, he didn’t actually use those words: he mumbled something like, “You did quite well there,” but I knew what he meant. And then some time later he invited me to his flat in Baker Street, talked about what he does and how he does it, and he showed me his latest experiments and taught me how to use his equipment.

He lives a dangerous life and, if he should die, I really hope that he’ll leave all his stuff to me. I’d like that, because I want to do his job and be a proper detective one day, and it’ll keep me off the streets.

He only invites us round occasionally, so we’re thinking of calling ourselves the Baker Street Irregulars, me and Bill.

But Sherlock still hasn’t kept his promise to show me pictures of beheadings.

Author’s Note:

Personally, I reckon Bill’s in for a fight if he thinks that he’s going to get Sherlock’s stuff. After Archie’s brilliant deduction in The Sign of Three, I think Sherlock should take him on as his natural successor. And I certainly hope that Sherlock kept his promise and showed Archie the headless nun for solving the case!

This story was helped on its way by having the Season 3 soundtrack blaring out of my speakers and annoying the neighbours. Say what you like about Amazon – and I know that there are many negative things about the company – but after they delivered both the DVD and the soundtrack on the Sunday before the official release dates, by special delivery even though I’d only ordered First Class delivery, they are currently my favourite people.

The story wasn’t helped along by the fact that, from Track 17 onwards, I had tears streaming down my face and I could hardly see the computer screen. If David Arnold and Michael Price don’t win every award out there for their superb music for this season, then there is no justice.

Happy birthday, Choco. We miss you around LJ; I hope you find more time in the future to continue with your clever observations and hilarious comments – and especially your fantastic fic. Come back soon, Little Miss Brilliant.

Oh that was excellently written - you tease!

But like you, I think Archie might make a natural successor to Sherlock, or at least the leader of the Irregulars!

Well done, Amazon! I have the DVD's but am still awaiting the sound track - hopefully sometime this week; can't wait!

Glad you liked it!

I played the soundtrack again last night after work. Still cried buckets through the latter part!

Well, I think really good music does tend to have that effect . . . even if means more sales for Kleenex!

I've just got home and my CD has finally arrived so off to listen very shortly!

Given that it's my birthday and everything, I think I'm allowed to, er, embellish the truth a tiny bit. So, Ariane, I obviously understood that it was Archie talking at the very last sentence from the first lines . You absolutely fooled didn't fool me with the it’ll keep me off the streets bit, that was particularly clever wasn't clever at all. I definitely had didn't have a "What the f..." moment when I read me and Bill. Because you're I'm super clever and I'll never learnI've learnt not to fall for your evil tricks. (I hope you're aware it would be terribly rude to contradict me, given that it's my birthday and everything.)

Now that I've established that you totally had me didn't have me at all... Thank you Ariane, you're a sweetheart and I love my present! I found Archie adorable in the show and it would lovely if Sherlock took him under his wing. Also Sherlock would feel less lonely. *sobs a bit* And the title is a French word, which is a kind thought. (What do you mean, "I didn't do it on purpose, it was in the script"? Oh shut up, you spoil everything.)

Thank you again, and thank you very much for what you say in the last lines too, it's very... *re-reads the last lines* WHO TOLD YOU I AM LITTLE? I'M NOT LITTLE, I'M... I'M JOHN-WHATSONESQUE.

P.S. Also, a huge thank you because you didn't write a het story for me. You wrote het stories in the past and you could have written a John/Mary fic *sobs horribly* and nobody could blame you because it's canon now *sobs hideously* but you didn't. So thank you. *is a tiny bit His Last Vow-traumatised*

*adopts Sherlock voice* That's my girl. */Sherlock voice*

And these are exactly the sort of comments we've missed: the ones that are funnier than the sodding story itself.

*grits teeth and puts a brave face on it.*

And I would never dare write het for you, of all people! Unlike Jim from IT, I do not have a death wish!

You know, I can see Sherlock keeping things going with Archie after the wedding - they seem to have a natural bond, and Sherlock seems to see a bit of himself in Archie. Wonderful voice for a bright kid, and I quite like what you did with this character.

What a lovely idea! I do hope we'll see more of Archie and Bill, in the series and in the fanworks.
