Setting up a second home – a PSA on behalf of Ari and the "Sherlock" transcripts

Because of the kerfuffle over the new Livejournal terms and conditions, I thought it wise to set up a Dreamwidth account for the benefit of people who are no longer comfortable using LJ. It made sense to do this anyway, because I’ve always been worried that if Livejournal should have a fatal meltdown, I would have to reload everything manually to another site, and this latest situation gave me the nudge to get on with it.

I (hopefully) transferred everything over to the new DW account yesterday. Of course, at present all the links in my Index go straight back to the Livejournal entries. It’ll take me weeks months to update the links to go to the Dreamwidth equivalent pages, plus I’ll also have to edit the Go to Part 2 / Return to Part 1 links inside each page of the transcripts. So that’ll be fun(!)

For the present I’m keeping this Livejournal blog open, mainly because there are so many fics and metas out there which provide a link to LJ. So unless things get drastically worse on LJ, I won’t be thinking about deleting this account. Once I’ve updated everything, I’ll put a big notice on the Index linking across to the Dreamwidth blog.

But anyway, if you would rather follow me on Dreamwidth instead of here, my new account is here. If I’ve set everything up properly, whenever I post anything new on DW it will automatically post to here as well for those who still follow this blog.

Thanks for letting us know; it's great to know things can be preserved at one end if not the other!

In the migration area, there is a box to check off if you want replies to transfer as well.

If you want more icons at LJ than you have icon space at DWidth, only 1 icon will transfer.

Oh, good grief, so you can! I didn't even see that box, or that it was unticked. I've started a second migration. Thanks!

The icons came across eventually. At first I didn't have a paid account, but now that I've bought an account, the icons have travelled safely.

If in fact I figure out the ins and outs of Dreamwidth (which appears to look like LJ but somehow doesn't do things the same way) then I will gladly follow you over there!

Had no idea that this bru-ha-ha was about to explode. I should probably pay more attention to things happening around me... Albeit, I never had a clue that LJ was owned by a Russian conglomerate. (Probably linked in some manner to the mysterious Trump tax returns that no one will EVER see, unless Trump actually needs to distract the public from a looming disaster of historic proportions... so, actually, more like 50/50...)

Thanks in advance for not only going thru hell to get Sherlock fans these transcripts but NOW YET AGAIN going thru hell to MOVE the transcripts so that people may continue to access them. That's going above and beyond!!

I too knew little about Dreamwidth - apart from its existence - until this kerfuffle kicked off, and had never investigated it before now simply because the last thing I needed/wanted was to have to update double the amount of entries whenever I made a correction to a transcript. However, because many people are now deliberately avoiding LJ, it seemed the right thing to do to transfer everything over to DW, and blissfully Dreamwidth migrated everything without any problems and I didn't have to manually transfer each page. Even the icons eventually went across as well and attached themselves to their original entries.

I was really hopeful that the URL page numbers would remain the same and that all I would have to do was change the "arianedevere.livejournal.com" bit to the corresponding dreamwidth URL but sadly the numbers are different each time. I've spent the last few days simply making a list of all the new numbers and will have to change each one manually. And there was me thinking that for once I would have a holiday when I didn't have to do Sherlocky things! Now I'll be stuck on the laptop all over Easter ...

*sighs tiredly* I don't get paid enough for all this shit. Oh, wait ... I don't get paid anyway!
